Each year, E-Sports becomes increasingly popular, and the number of tournaments held only increases. These competitions are spectated by a large audience, with even larger sums of money to be won. Universities all over the world have become aware of the popularity of E-Sports, and many have begun to offer programs in direct correlation to this. In doing this, students are offered the valuable skills that they need, and this in itself leads to an increase in the number of professional teams appearing in this field. However, the competition in E-Sports is so high that it is difficult not only to win but to actually get the chance to participate in a tournament.
What is E-Sports
E-Sports is competitive level gaming. It is teams of people playing games against each other at a professional level, regularly winning huge sums of money as prizes. These esports players are contracted to play for a variety of different organizations, much like a football or basketball player would be. These teams practice and compete in their respective game just as a footballer or other sportsperson would too. Depending on the game they play – from shooters such as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive esports and Call of Duty esports to the multitude of other genres like sports titles and battle royale games – there will be a number of tournaments and events each year with hundreds of thousands of dollars in prizes up for grabs, sometimes even entering the millions.
CompLexity Gaming, or coL for short, is one of the oldest esports organizations in the world, having been founded way back in 2003 as a team gathered around Counterstrike 1.6. The organization has fielded a remarkably diverse set of teams that compete in CSGO, Dota 2, CoD, Clash Royale, Fortnite, Rocket League, and Madden, among others. The team’s long competitive history caught the eye of Jerry Jones, the owner of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, who purchased it in 2017. CoL now shares the NFL team’s HQ at the city of Frisco, Texas, where it began construction of its own esports facility last year. Evil Geniuses (EG) is one of the oldest North American professional gaming organizations, having been founded in 1999. EG is known to have fielded extraordinarily successful teams and players in every esports title it has featured and is thus recognized among the world’s most premier esports organizations.
While the team had its start as a North American Quake clan, its first major esports entries were in Dota 1 in 2008, then StarCraft: Brood War the year after. The organization then ramped up its operations in 2010 by entering SC2 with the game’s release, as well as the fighting games scene — with the notable signing of fighting games legend Justin Wong.
While EG had been fielding Dota 2 teams since 2011, it took over 3 years for the organization to start to make waves in the scene. In 2014, EG signed an up-and-coming North American lineup that was captained by Peter “ppd” Dager, going on to finish 3rd at TI4 — the best results an American team had at that point. Later that year, EG’s parent organization, GoodGame Agency, was also acquired by Twitch. The year after, the departure of two of its players forced EG to make bold decisions to have a roster fit to participate in TI5 — including the signing of the 15-year-old Pakistani pub star Syed “SumaiL” Hassan.
Despite largely being written off that year, EG went on to win TI5 and a grand prize of over $6.6 million — the biggest of its time. Since then, EG continues to be the top team in North America and has even finished in the top 3 in TI6 and TI8 with the use of eft aimbot. After TI6, EG became one of the first player-owned esports organizations when the captain of its Dota 2 team, Peter Dager, retired from competitive play to become CEO. He would later step down from his position to return to a career as a professional player. Aside from Dota, SC2, and fighting games, EG has also been active in titles such as Rocket League, Rainbow Six: Siege, Super Smash Bros., and CoD — where the team won the 2018 world championship.
Benefit of E-Sports
While there are certainly those that have found a way to injure themselves playing video games, the likelihood of your child suffering a career-ending e-sports injury is relatively low. It’s also true that contact sports like football are quite dangerous. There is a risk of broken bones, sprains, and concussions. While much effort has gone into making the sport less dangerous, the threat is still present. For example. baseball has a serious risk of injury. Being struck by a baseball traveling at many miles can be potentially life-threatening. Even non-contact sports like bowling can damage knees and wrists.
