As we enter into the new decade, not much has changed in regard to the earnings of the actors at the top echelons of the entertainment industry. Dwane “The Rock” Johnson, who was the second highest paid actor in 2018, has topped the current annual Forbes list of highest paid actors for 2019, making him the best paid actor going into 2020.
Johnson is of course best known for the seemingly never ending Fast and Furious franchise, and his latest film, “Hobbs and Shaw”, was a spin-off from that cinematic cash-cow. He earned $89.4 million between June of 2018 and June of 2019, firmly placing him in first place for highest paid actors going into 2020.
Unsurprisingly, actors from the Marvel universe have dominated the rest of the list. Chris Hemsworth, who played Thor in both “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Endgame,” came in second, earning $76.4 million. He was followed by Robert Downey Jr in third, who earned $66 million for his role as Iron Man in the same films. Chris Evans (Captain America) and Paul Rudd (Ant-man) also featured further down.
In fourth place is Akshay Kumar, a Bollywood actor who earned $65 million over the course of the year – just $1 million less than Robert Downey Jr. Kumars latest film was “Mission Mangal”, which passed a Bollywood box-office milestone grossing over 1 billion Indian rupees (or $14 million).
A perhaps more familiar face took the number five spot – Jackie Chan. He earned a total of $58 million for his roles in movies “The Knight of Shadows: Between Yin and Yang” and “Journey to China: Mystery of the Iron Mask,” which was recently in theatres in China.
Adam Sandler and Bradley Cooper were actually tied for the number six spot, with both actors earning $57 million over the year. Cooper earned about 10% of his $57 million for voicing Rocket Raccoon in Avengers, while he earned the majority of it for “A Star is Born”, which he directed and starred in along with Lady Gaga. Adam Sandler on the other hand cracked the top 10 due to his Netflix deal, which gave him multiple movie roles, all of which being at least reasonably popular. One of them – “Murder Mystery” – was watched by 73 million households according to Netflix.
Chris Evans and Paul Rudd took the 8th and 9th spots respectively, for their roles in Avengers as previously mentioned, while Will Smith came in at 10th earning $35 million.
